11/30/94 Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA This was one hell of a set, folks. It is basically a relief that it ends Cavern,
HorseSilent, Amazing Grace, given what came before (one of the sickest Antelopes of the Fall, Fixin to Die!, a LONG Yamar,
Mike's Song, Catapult, McGrupp..). This set was a car tape for me for a bit. FWIW, the Reba at this show was dragged out
like Reba rarely is.. just absolutely outrageous. Fishman refused to end it, it seems.. just really dragged out. Kinda falters and
hurts the version, imo, because of it. Just INSANE, though (it would have been so much better had it ended about two minutes
before it actually did, as one would have expected it to end.. when listening to the evolution of the jam segment that Trey had
crafted). As in the Spokane Harry, Trey gets really quiet in the Yamar (actually playing unamplified at one point!). Lots of
noodling in it. It is exceptional in this sense, but Mike's bass sounds horribly out of tune after Trey's quiet jam.. just terrible. I
don't know what happened (if this is intentional, it sounds like SHIT -- really). Trey finishes it up quick.. and segues right into
Mike's Song! A sudden segue out of Yamar, presumably after Mike picked up a new bass (he sounds fine now). The tramps
segment comes in at the usual time.. I don't think they are on the tramps, though (crowd awfully quiet). Trey takes a Curious
Approach to this jam segment. Very thematic and funky, and frankly, almost a YEM-jam-segment-sortof-groove around the
4:30 minute point. Not much from anyone, though, except Fish. Lots of drums! This is cool! Fish lays down some sweet fills,
and well, it is really just him for the next minute with chords every few beats from Page, Mike and Trey. Christ, it has been
awhile since I listened to this! Not your typical Mike's Song at all. At 6:04 Trey starts singing Catapult, and it is a terribly
light-hearted version, unaccompanied... fast, too.. McGrupp's segues gorgeously in at 6:57 (only one audible scream out of the
audience.. they must have just been stunned at this point). Well, this wasn't really much of a Mike's Song.. Trey didn't do much
of anything for the first minute and a half of the tramps segment, and well, then it was basically just Fishman for the next minute
and a half. Arguably the closest thing to a drum solo that I've ever heard the band permit Fishman!! Not that impressive, but
still, it would be negligent of me not to give it a solid C+/B- rating (approaching AWESOME). Fishman drumming fans, don't
get too excited.. he puts some nice fills in here, but it ain't as amazing as I know he can get, because I think he wasn't really
prepared. I'm sure his virtual soloing for a minute and a half in this version was wholly unplanned, and just came about because
Trey decided he didn't want to wail in this MikeS (and he really didn't wail at all).
