charlie.dirksen@his.com 6/17/94 Nissan Pavilion @ Stone Ridge, Gainesville, VA I: Divided Sky, Suzy Greenberg, Taste, Fee, Uncle Penn, Julius, Lawn Boy, Curtain > Stash II: Wilson > Maze, Mound, Tweezer > Johnny B. Goode* | Tweezer > McGrupp's, Acoustic Army, Sweet Adeline, Harry Hood, Sample E: 3 Little Birds** * first Johnny B. Goode. Fully jammed. Much better than any Dead version of the last 15+ years. Much MUCH better. ** with Dave Matthews and the DMB Saxaphone-guy, whatever-his-name-is. Goofy, fun version. A lot of psychedelic, watery-guitar effects from Trey (even in Mound, and McGrupp's!!). Tweezer was one of the best I have ever heard (I liked it much more than Bangor or MSG from last year!). It was long, perhaps around MSG's length, but I didn't time it. It had a fantastic disco feel.. First set around an hour and ten minutes, second set about an hour and twenty mins, or so (again, I wasn't keeping accurate time). NOTE: Jonathan "Jepstein" Epstein wished upon a star last night for Curtain (and got his wish). see you at Deer Creek! (Mike's Groove first set.. ;^) I forgot to mention that the sound on the lawn was much, much crispier than the pavilion, which exhibited a lot of reverb for much of the first, and some of the 2nd, sets. Also, the Maze and Hood were extremely notable. If you have the opportunity to go to a show, but are thinking "I don't want to drive that far..," then, you aren't "thinking" at all. You should see as many shows on this tour as possible. If Walnut and Gainesville are any reflection of what is to come, this might be my favorite Phish month *ever*, over August 1993. Why? Well, if you have to ask this question, you probably haven't heard a lot of 1995 Phish. It goes without saying (the Tweezer from Gainesville and the YEM from Walnut Creek were awe-inspiring versions, that are easily some of the best I've ever heard). GO SEE PHISH. YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T. charlie (and you might just be able to shake hands with Tom Marshall, as I did last night before the show)
